News:

In November of 2007, the San Gregorio Environmental Resource Center entered into an agreement with the Dept. of Transportation for litter removal along a stretch of Highway 84 in San Gregorio. The area is between the 4 mile and 8 mile markers, turnouts only. In January, two of our volunteers attended a safety training and received safety equipment, supplies and instructions for performing this work.

On a recent weekend in February, these two volunteers picked up 15 bags of trash and many large items of debris. Though this first foray required many hours, it is expected that there will be much less litter in subsequent monthly pick-ups.

If you would like to join this effort, contact the office (650) 726-2499, visit our website or join our maillist for future clean-up events.

Since 2002, the California Watershed Network has hosted an annual Watershed Education Day for Legislators. This event provides an opportunity for community-based watershed programs and groups to showcase their work to California legislators! CWN uses this event to increase the awareness of the importance of local watershed management to our elected officials. This year's event will be Thursday, April 10th at the CalEPA Building
1001 I Street – Byron Sher Auditorium, Sacramento, CA.

  • A public meeting will be held April 17th to inform the public of the project and invite members of the community to participate in a workgroup that will help guide this project.
  • The Technical Advisory Committee met in November 2007 and March 2008 to discuss the scope of the Assessment and Plan and provide guidance for the project.
  • Several exciting results of our efforts:
    - A "Watershed Information System" will be available to all on the Web. This tool will allow anyone to see all the studies and reports that have been done in the San Gregorio Watershed over the past decades. You may select any study or report and link to the actual document or photograph. The unveiling of this website should come soon.
    - GIS map layers have been created for our watershed. These map layers allow for modeling to be done that identify data gaps, or areas that need further study. Modeling also allows for scenarios to be created that help guide future planning for the watershed.
    - New monitoring equipment has been purchased for our water quality monitoring. The new equipment allows for more precise and accurate measurements as well as compatibility with other monitoring programs throughout the state. The majority of our monitors have now been trained in the use of this new equipment.

Assessment and Plan Overview

SGERC, with the Natural Heritage Institute and several partners, has been awarded a $500,000 grant for a Watershed Assessment and Plan for the San Gregorio Watershed.  This Assessment and Plan will allow us to better understand the current state of the watershed and determine what, if any, steps should be taken in the future to ensure water quality, water quantity and the general health of the environment. This will benefit all water users, residents and visitors in the watershed. This will be a two year project beginning in January of 2007. More information will be available on the Watershed Info page of this website in coming months.

See our Resources page to view data our volunteers have collected through the years at various sites in the San Gregorio Watershed. You can view yearly charts of each of the water quality parameters that are measured. Discharge (or flow) data is available for two of our monitoring sites. If anyone is interested for any purpose in the raw data, equipment or methods used, please contact the SGERC office.

SGERC Stream Monitoring Program

We have positions open for stream monitors. In addition to our regular weekly water quality and discharge monitoring on San Gregorio, La Honda and Alpine Creeks, we have begun monthly monitoring in several new locations in the San Gregorio watershed. We will also begin specific monitoring for our grant beginning in April or May of this year.

Volunteers are now performing monthly water quality monitoring on Woodhams Creek in La Honda and at the San Gregorio Beach Lagoon.  We have completed our third year of monitoring La Honda Creek at Weeks Creek in the La Honda Open Space Preserve.  Thanks to MROSD for permission to monitor on the Preserve. Please join us for this fun and easy contribution to our community, and a wonderful way to get close to our streams and varied wildlife.

Training is provided! All are welcome!

Stream Monitoring in the Schools

On November 29th, 2007, SGERC joined teacher Randy Vail and his class at Pescadero High to share information about streams, stream monitoring and the local environment. Beginning with a classroom demonstration of equipment and approaches to monitoring, the class moved to nearby Pescadero Creek for some "hands-on" experience in field monitoring and data gathering. An enjoyable morning was had by all! This may become a model for future sessions at Pescadero High.

SGERC has also been in discussions with teachers at La Honda Elementary regarding the possiblity of a similar session and perhaps an ongoing monitoring program at La Honda Creek near Entrada.
